By Alesha Syed, American Red Cross
The reason I decided to become an American Red Cross volunteer was because of the many opportunities that had an actual community impact. Not only could I help others spread their stories, but I could also learn lifesaving skills at the same time.
I began my journey with the Red Cross when I participated in the CPR/BLS certification training. I thought it would be a useful skill to have in the future; one day I might save a life. But it turned into something more. It began a passion for emergency medical services. I started to participate in competitions regarding CPR and first aid, winning prizes as testament to the valuable skills that I learned through the Red Cross.
Not only did the American Red Cross ignite my passion, but it also led me to opportunities to help the community in ways I never thought I’d be able to, whether it be helping orient new volunteers, proofing satellite maps, or spreading awareness to the stories of others. There are so many opportunities to aid communities around the nation that, sometimes, it becomes overwhelming–in the best sense.
Although the opportunities may seem to be the most attractive aspect of the Red Cross, it is the fulfillment of being an active community member that makes me love the organization the way I do. Helping a person in need brings me such joy, along with a sense of duty to continue my actions. It promotes my sense of responsibility to those around me and allows me to grow as a person in return.
