On June 27, the American Red Cross, in collaboration with the Manville Office of Emergency Management, hosted a preparedness event at the Manville Public Library and educated community members about steps they can take to prepare themselves and their homes for local hazards like hurricanes and floods.
Floods are not uncommon in the Manville area, as it is surrounded by both the Raritan and Millstone Rivers. This community was devastated by Hurricane Ida in 2021 after the storm displaced many families and caused immense damage to homes and businesses.
Red Cross Regional Preparedness Manager Paul Gass led a Be Red Cross Ready presentation, discussing specific risks the Manville community faces and how to make the community more resilient. The program focuses on three important steps: Get a Kit, Make a Plan, and Be Informed.
It was a timely presentation as the Atlantic hurricane season is underway, falling from June 1 through November 30. Paul explained, “It only takes one storm to cause devastating damage. Without communication and having a plan in place, there could be chaos.”
One attendee, Jessica Nichols, was impacted by Ida and began working as the operations manager for a food bank in a neighboring town soon after. “When Ida hit, it was a panic and many felt there was a lack of information,” said Jessica. “Since then, we’ve all been trying to best get preparedness information out there, making sure it reaches everyone in our town. Having this event and hopefully, future events, is a great opportunity to do that.”
The Red Cross was pleased to help prepare adults and children alike. Red Cross volunteers held a Prepare With Pedro presentation for several of the young children in attendance. Pedro is an adorable penguin who, through his storybook adventures, helps teach children how to stay safe during emergencies like home fires and hurricanes.
We urge everyone to learn about their local hazards to prepare for these emergencies. To learn more about what you can do before, during and after disaster, visit redcross.org/GetPreparedNJ. Also, be sure to download the free emergency App for emergency alerts.
