The Oklahoma City Red Cross team led by Mary Jane Coffman and Anne Greiner along with Louise Grenier, Irene Mireles, David Nelms, Esther Reiner, Linda Sadler and James Standfill met in Amber, Oklahoma and teamed with the Amber Oklahoma Fire Department firefighters to install smoke alarms. The Red Cross continues to install free smoke alarms and sharing fire safety information in at-risk communities. Since the campaign launched in 2014, our volunteers and partners have helped save lives by installing more than 2.3 million smoke alarms.
Four teams of two Red Cross members and two Amber firefighters installed a total of 50 smoke alarms and included fire information packets as well to the Amber community. This in one way Red Cross helps local fire departments to protect their communities against house fires.
The Red Cross responds to more than 60,000 disasters a year — and the majority are home fires. Home fires claim seven lives a day in the U.S., but working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half. When the worst happens, we’re there too. After a home fire, Red Cross volunteers work with local fire departments to connect with families for needs like emergency lodging, financial assistance and emotional support. Thanks to donations, our services are free and available for all those in need. Visit redcross.org to support our lifesaving work.
