Attention pet parents: The Red Cross knows that your pets are part of your family so keep them in mind when you are making your disaster preparedness plans.  If it’s not safe for you to stay home during evacuations, it’s not safe for them either.

Before disaster strikes:

• Prepare a list with phone numbers to have on hand.
• Take a picture of your pet in case you get separated and you need to share it with others.
• Make sure you are following local emergency management agencies on social media.
• Pack a “Go Kit” for your pets that includes:
  • Sturdy leashes, harnesses and/or carriers to transport pets safely and ensure that they can’t escape.
  • Food, drinking water, bowls, cat litter/pan and a manual can opener if you pet eats canned food.
  • Medications and copies of medical records stored in a waterproof container.
  • A first aid kit.
  • Current photos of you with your pet(s) in case they get lost. Since many pets look alike, this will help to eliminate mistaken identity and confusion.
  • Information on feeding schedules, medical conditions, behavior problems, and the name and number of your veterinarian in case you have to foster or board your pets.
  • Pet beds and toys, if easily transportable.

During a disaster:

• Know where the Red Cross shelters are located.
• If you are going to a hotel, make sure it’s pet friendly.
• Let family members and friends know where you are your pet are going.
• Make sure you take the Go Kit for yourself and your pets.

After a disaster:

Your pet’s behavior may change dramatically after a disaster, becoming aggressive or defensive. Be aware of their well-being and protect them from hazards to ensure the safety of other people and animals.

• Watch your animals closely and keep them under your direct control as fences and gates may have been damaged.
• Pets may become disoriented, particularly if the disaster has affected scent markers that normally allow them to find their home.
• Be aware of hazards at nose and paw or hoof level, particularly debris, spilled chemicals, fertilizers and other substances that might not seem to be dangerous to humans.
• Consult your veterinarian if any behavior problems persist

Bottom line, you treat your pets like family so please include them in all your evacuation plans during this wildfire season. Be safe out there.
