For some of the Red Cross volunteers throughout the world, the seed to become part of the Red Cross,  was planted when they were adolescents as was the case for our volunteer, Yarisa Yaroch. 

Yarisa was born in San Juan Puerto Rico and as a teenager she received training in CPR and First Aid from the Red Cross.  In addition, she became a Red Cross certified lifeguard which enabled her to work as a lifeguard at a Girl Scout camp in her city.  Her admiration and respect for the Red Cross was also due to their presence and assistance during the many hurricanes that occur in this beautiful island.

After high school, Yarisa moved to the United States to attend college in Indiana where she majored in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.  She describes her first semester as an adventure.  Her English skills from her Puerto Rican education had been mostly for reading and writing English.  In addition, the different culture that she was now experiencing  in this  Indiana college was also challenging.  However, by the end of her first semester she felt comfortable and her English was sufficient.

Yarisa had always thought that some day she would volunteer for the Red Cross and that’s what she did when she moved to Portland two years ago.  In a very short time she qualified for several GAPs including DAT (Disaster Action Team), Shelter Supervisor, Feeding, Damage Assessment, Reunification, Recovery Intake, and Logistics.  Her first language, Spanish, was instrumental in most of her placements.  Yarisa explained the big need that we have in the United States for volunteers who are Spanish speakers and are familiar with Hispanic cultures. 

Amongst her deployments she mentioned going to Arizona where she volunteered at the airport in Tucson helping persons who were going to the airport, many of them for the first time.  They were Spanish speakers who needed help getting their tickets to travel to their destinations.  Yarisa also determined if they needed food or clothing appropriate for the weather of their destination.  This type of volunteering requires persons who are sensitive to the different cultures, who also speak their language and who are good at observing and determining their needs.  Yarisa is that kind of volunteer.

During tornado season she was deployed to Arkansas and Missouri.  Many people in Arkansas that she helped were Hispanic.  She worked at the Recovery Intake table interviewing the clients  and commented that her line was so long because she was the only Red Cross volunteer who could speak Spanish.

Yarisa shared a very touching story about her volunteering at a Disaster in Ruidoso, New Mexico in 2024.  She was doing intake at the Refuge that sheltered clients after the flood, using her Spanish in interviewing them as well as doing follow up.  One of the families told her how a very strong current had come suddenly and dragged the RV that was their home with all their possessions in it.  Once the waters came down, they found their RV which was destroyed as well as everything inside.  Since they qualified for financial help, Yarisa worked with them to find somewhere to live.  They found someone who was leaving New Mexico and was selling his mobile home.  The family needed just a bit more financial aid to purchase the home which the Red Cross was able to provide.  When Yarisa asked them if there was anything else that they needed, the family said just cleaning supplies because the mobile home was very dirty.  The touching moment for Yarisa was when the seven year old came to her and told her that this was the first time that he would sleep in his own room.

She feels grateful to the Red Cross for giving her the opportunity to help those who have been affected by a disaster.  It gives her an internal happiness.

Yarisa would like to encourage the Latino community to consider being a Red Cross volunteer.  Their Spanish skills are extremely important in helping clients who have just experienced a disaster.  Since the trauma results in a person being silent and in shock, if there is a volunteer who speaks their language and is familiar with their culture, a door can open.

In her own words, “Don’t wait, join the Red Cross which offers the necessary courses to train you to be a real volunteer.  There are many jobs you can perform.  There is something for you.  To be a volunteer fills your heart.”

Para algunos de los voluntarios de la Cruz Roja mundialmente el comienzo del interés en ser parte de la Cruz Roja empezó cuando eran adolescentes.  Así es con nuestra voluntaria Yarisa Yaroch.

Yarisa nació en San Juan, Puerto Rico y cuando era jovencita recibió entrenamientos de la Cruz Roja en Resucitación Cardiopulmonar y en Primeros Auxilios.  También, al tomar una clase para ser salvavidas obtuvo su certificado aprobado por la Cruz Roja Americana con el cual pudo trabajar de salvavidas en el campamento Elisa Colbert de las Girl Scouts en su ciudad.  Su admiración y respeto por la Cruz Roja se debía también a su presencia y asistencia durante los tantos huracanes que ocurren en esta hermosa isla.

Al terminar su educación secundaria Yarisa se mudó a los Estados Unidos para asistir a una universidad en el estado de Indiana donde se especializó en Ingeniería Eléctrica y de Computación.  Yarisa describe su primer semestre como una aventura.  Sus destrezas en inglés que había adquirido durante su educación en Puerto Rico eran principalmente para poder leer y escribir.  También, era un poco difícil adaptarse a la cultura diferente de esta universidad de Indiana.  Sin embargo, hacia fines del primer semestre Yarisa se sintió cómoda y su inglés era suficiente.

Yarisa siempre supo que algún día ella iba a ser voluntaria con la Cruz roja y así fue porque al llegar a Portland hace dos años se hizo voluntaria.  En poco tiempo calificó para varios GAPs incluyendo DAT(Equipo de Desastres), Supervisora de Refugios, Comida, Evaluación de Daños, Reunificación,  Ingreso de Datos y Logística.  Su lengua nativa, el español, ha sido instrumental en casi todos sus trabajos como voluntaria.  Yarisa explicó la gran necesidad que existe en los Estados Unidos de tener voluntarios que sean hispano hablantes y que conozcan las culturas hispanas.

Entre los viajes que ha hecho a distintos lugares de desastres mencionó su voluntariado en el aeropuerto de Tucson, Arizona donde ayudó a distintas personas que tenían que ir al aeropuerto por la primera vez.  Ellos eran hispano hablantes que necesitaban ayuda para conseguir sus pasajes.  También Yarisa determinaba si la persona necesitaba alimento y vestimenta apropiada para el clima de su destino.  Este tipo de voluntariado requiere personas que sean sensitivas a las diferentes culturas, que hablen su idioma y que sean buenos observadores para determinar sus necesidades.  Yarisa es este tipo de voluntaria.

Durante la época de los tornados la mandaron a Arkansas y Missouri.  Muchas de las personas que ayudó en Arkansas eran hispanas.  En el refugio de Arkansas trabajó en Ingreso de Datos entrevistando a estos clientes y Yarisa comentó que su fila de espera era tan larga debido a que ella era la única voluntaria que hablaba español.

Yarisa compartió una historia muy tierna que ocurrió cuando había viajado a Ruidoso, Nuevo México para ayudar después de un desastre en 2024.  Su trabajo era con ingreso de datos y también de seguimiento en el refugio que albergaba a clientes después de la inundación.  Una de las familias le contó que una corriente de agua muy fuerte y repentina se había llevado a su vehículo recreacional y que ese era su hogar con todas sus posesiones.  Una vez que bajaron las aguas la familia encontró a su vehículo que estaba destrozado junto con todo lo que había adentro.  Ya que ellos calificaban para ayuda financiera, Yarisa trabajó con ellos para encontrar un lugar donde vivir.  Encontraron a alguien que se iba a mudar de Nuevo México y que quería vender su casa mobil.  La familia solo necesitaba un poco más para comprar la casa y la Cruz Roja pudo proveerles esa ayuda.  Cuando Yarisa les preguntó si necesitaban algo más la familia le dijo que necesitaban unos productos de limpieza porque la estaba muy sucia.  El momento más tierno para Yarisa fue cuando el hijo de siete años le dijo que esta era la primera vez que iba a dormir en su propio cuarto.

Ella se siente agradecida a la Cruz Roja por darle la oportunidad de ayudar a personas que han sido afectados por un desastre.  Le brinda a ella felicidad interna.

Yarisa desea entusiasmar a la comunidad latina a que consideren ser voluntarios de la Cruz Roja.  Sus destrezas con el español son extremadamente importantes cuando se ayuda a clientes que acaban de ser afectados por un desastre.   Debido a que el trauma causa que una persona no hable y esté en shock, el hecho que haya una persona voluntaria que hable su idioma y que conozca su cultura puede abrir una puerta.

En sus propias palabras, “No esperen, únanse a la Cruz Roja.  La Cruz Roja les ofrece los cursos necesarios para ser voluntarios.  Ser voluntario de verdad te llena el corazón.  Hay muchos trabajos diferentes para voluntarios.  Hay algo para ti.”

Su visión es que haya más personas latinas que se unan a la Cruz Roja y así que puedan unir esa comunidad con la Cruz Roja.
