Angela Hansen joined the American Red Cross Pacific Islands Region Hawai‘i Chapter on O‘ahu only a couple weeks ago, and even though she is still completing her online training, she didn’t hesitate to step forward when the Kona low storm created an urgent need for help across the state.
Her first disaster response assignment placed her with the logistics team, the volunteers who manage the movement, storage and delivery of essential disaster supplies such as cots, blankets, comfort kits, drinking water and cleanup tools. This team often activates within one to two hours to support shelters and distribute relief items to affected communities. They also oversee transportation routing, procurement, warehouse readiness and overall supply chain coordination to ensure responders and the people affected receive the equipment, materials and support they need as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Working alongside logistics volunteers gave Angela a close look at a community pulling together during a stressful moment. She noticed how eager people were to help and how often they simply needed direction. She also observed how quickly shifting disaster conditions can create challenges for responders.
This assignment was Angela’s first introduction to the Red Cross presence on O‘ahu, including supply warehouses that keep disaster resources ready. She said she didn’t encounter any major surprises behind the scenes but appreciated seeing how the different parts of the response come together in support of the larger mission.
“The approachability of the [Red Cross] leadership was especially helpful,” Angela shared. “We did our best to keep communication flowing up and down the chain of command, and I felt comfortable reaching out to anyone I needed in order to get answers.”
With five lines of service and many volunteer roles to explore, Angela is open to serving in a variety of areas as she continues her training. She prefers to work behind the scenes and wants to learn where she can be most helpful. Angela chose to volunteer because she finally has the time and wants to support others while contributing to something larger than herself.
