On the morning of October 21, 2025, the Red Cross responded to the temporary displacement of residents affected by an incident in Kapahulu by opening Paki Hale in Honolulu as a temporary assembly area. This location served as a relief station with access to water and facilities. Later, when it was determined that the residents would not be able to return home that night, Paki Hale became an Emergency Shelter, providing a safe and secure space to those in need.
Residents were welcomed with dinner and water provided in partnership with the Salvation Army, along with a designated area for overnight rest with cots and blankets. In the early hours of the 22nd, residents were able to return home, which they were eager to do. The shelter officially closed at approximately 5:30 a.m., with all residents’ needs having been met.
Many expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Red Cross for offering a place of comfort during a time of uncertainty. Huge kudos to the Red Cross volunteer responders, the Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Parks & Recreation for their swift coordination and support in serving our community when it was needed most.
