This past weekend's tragic fire reminds us how important it is to have...working smoke alarms.
Following this past weekend’s fatal fire on the 2400 block of Wylie Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, a small group of American Red Cross and Calvary Baptist Church volunteers went door-to-door in the neighborhood, educating residents on the importance of having and practicing home fire escape plans and installing close to 30 free smoke alarms on Tuesday, June 6, 2017.
“This past weekend’s tragic fire reminds us how important it is to have home fire escape plans and working smoke alarms,” noted Dan Tobin, American Red Cross Western Pennsylvania Director of Marketing and Communications. “Our goal today is to provide fire safety information to area residents and install free smoke alarms as needed.”
The Hill District canvassing event is part of the American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, a five-year initiative aimed at reducing the number of home fire-related deaths and injuries by 25% through the installing of free smoke alarms and the education of community members on the importance of home fire safety.
