Behind every Red Cross disaster response lies careful planning and data-driven decision making. Louis Luangkesorn, a Red Cross volunteer from Pittsburgh, embodies this strategic approach, applying his analytical expertise to help communities prepare for and recover from disasters of all sizes.
As both a disaster response planner and a professional data scientist, Louis demonstrates how volunteering not only serves communities in crisis but also strengthens his career.
Expertise in Action
Louis's Red Cross journey began over 20 years ago while he was studying supply chain management at Northwestern University, and the Mississippi River flooded. The event motivated him to volunteer with the Red Cross and put his education to the test in the real world.
“Instead of studying operations, I was actually taking part in them, with all the complications of running operations in disaster,” Louis said.
Now, as a Red Cross volunteer specializing in information and planning, Louis coordinates with county emergency management agencies to ensure Red Cross volunteers, supplies and services reach people when they need help.
"When a disaster strikes, we quickly estimate service demands and resource needs over time,” Louis said. “This allows us to mobilize rapidly, even before complete information comes in from affected areas. As better data arrives, we adjust our response accordingly. The crucial thing is that we show up fast."
Louis also helps disaster response leadership teams make sound decisions by creating strategic alternatives based on different priorities and challenges. In the downtime between disasters, Louis works on improving the planning tools used during emergencies.
Meaningful Moments
For Louis, some of the most meaningful moments of his Red Cross journey come from direct interactions with the people he helps.
"When you are with a family, it is one of the worst days in their lives,” Louis said. “You are in the moment, determining what they need, and also aware of their state, guiding and comforting them so they know we are with them as they figure out what comes next."
