Close to 30 American Red Cross volunteers were stationed at various locations around the city to assist with the Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday, May 6. Volunteers were grouped into four different functions for the event.
One set of volunteers staffed a family reunification tent near the Wyndham on Liberty, where they provided limited first-aid and water as they work with families to locate their runners either during or after the race.
A second set of volunteers was stationed at the finish line medical tent, where they acted as a liaison between families and injured runners.
“The race is always a great day for the city, and a wonderful experience for all who participate.”
Volunteers were also at seven area hospitals, working closely with the medical staffs to keep families informed of where any injured runners were taken, updates to their conditions, and to even collect runners’ belongings that might have been left behind due to a medical emergency.
Finally, a team of volunteers was on the SAG buses that swept the course following the race to assist any runners who simply could not go any further and were unable to complete the race.
“We are extremely proud to be able to support the Pittsburgh Marathon, its runners, and their families,” noted Dan Tobin, American Red Cross Western Pennsylvania Director of Marketing and Communications. “The race is always a great day for the city, and a wonderful experience for all who participate.”
