Did you know while Santa is making his list, checking it twice, and finding out who’s naughty or nice, he’s also donating platelets?
In early December, Santa traveled more than 3,500 miles from the North Pole and visited the American Red Cross of South Carolina’s Central Chapter Office in Columbia, all to help save lives.
Santa donated platelets in our blood donation center while his nine reindeer anxiously waited outside, ready for the next stop in their holiday journey. Even during one of the busiest times of the year, Santa made time to roll up his sleeves and give back.
“I started donating whole blood when I was 18 years old,” said Santa. “I started donating platelets about a year and half ago.”
Platelets are a key clotting component of blood often needed by cancer patients.
By giving platelets regularly, donors can help patients recover from other life-threatening illnesses and injuries.
Unlike whole blood, Platelets must be transfused within just five days after a donation is made. That’s why there’s a constant, and often critical need for new and current donors to give to keep up with hospital demands.
Santa has also donated Power Reds and whole blood before. He says he understands the need for lifesaving blood and platelets donations not only because he has battled cancer himself, but also because he worked as a nurse for nearly 40 years.
During that time, he witnessed firsthand how blood transfusions can help.
“It’s the right thing to do,” said Santa. “You’re helping save lives, that’s how I look at it.”
Time is critical for patients this December. The American Red Cross urges donors to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now to keep the blood supply steady over the busy holiday season.
This year, Americans are expected to surpass last year’s record-setting holiday travel plans. With more people headed away from home, blood and platelet donations can dip at a crucial time when patients count on care.
For those first-time donors who feel uncertain about donating, Santa has a special message for them.
“It’s a gift of life,” said Santa. “Donate now for the holidays and donate year-round.”
There’s still time to help save lives this year. Give something that means something and make an appointment to give blood or platelets by using the Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
