Our team from the Greater San Antonio Chapter had the privilege of presenting a Lifesaving Award to Harvey Haas, a resident of the Eden Hill Community, after he saved another resident from choking.
With smiles and excitement, residents filled the room at Eden Hill Community to celebrate with their friend and neighbor. Becky Martinez, a Community Volunteer Leader representing our Executive Director, Dr. Daniel P. Martinez, was on hand to present the award.
Harvey arrived in a burgundy jacket and proudly wore a Texas A&M pin, representing his alma mater.
As the ceremony began, Becky shared the story behind Harvey’s heroic actions. Back in March, during a St. Patrick’s Day picnic at Eden Hill Community, dozens of residents gathered to enjoy good food and great company.
In the middle of this cheerful afternoon, an emergency unfolded. Dolly Meglasson, seated among friends, suddenly began choking on a piece of cantaloupe. Panic rippled through the crowd—but one person didn’t hesitate.
Harvey Haas, sitting across from Dolly, immediately recognized the danger. With calm determination, he rushed to her side and performed the Heimlich maneuver. The tension was thick as Dolly struggled to breathe, but Harvey’s swift and confident actions saved her life. The cantaloupe was dislodged, and Dolly could breathe again.
Dolly later shared her deep gratitude, saying Harvey didn’t hesitate for a moment. His courage and clarity in a moment of crisis made all the difference.
What could have been a tragic moment became a powerful example of community in action—neighbors looking out for one another, bravery and compassion shining through.
Harvey was awarded the Certificate of Extraordinary Personal Action (CEPA), which recognizes individuals who save a life without having received Red Cross training.
