Every now and then, volunteers join the American Red Cross whose hearts already seem deeply connected to the mission. Patsy and Don Berry are precisely those volunteers.
The Fredericktown, MO couple joined the Red Cross in December 2024. Despite being relatively new, their dedication and impact have quickly become extraordinary.
Initially volunteering with the Disaster Action Team (DAT), typically responding to support local families who have been displaced by home fires, Don quickly expanded his involvement. He completed additional training in Mass Care, Disaster Assessment, and Disaster Services Technology.
When multiple tornadoes struck Southeast Missouri and Northern Arkansas earlier this year, Don stepped into a Disaster Assessment role, classifying and mapping damage.
His background in Information Technology also proved invaluable, as he set up crucial computer equipment for Red Cross personnel at Multiple Agency Resource Centers (MARCs). Pasty said this was their first experience in a MARC.

"We felt both valued and humbled at the same time, as odd as that may sound,” Patsy said.
Later, he transitioned to a Client Care Ambassador role, directly supporting affected clients with warmth and care.
Patsy initially started volunteering to support Don.
"It was his idea," she admits, “but I think it’s beginning to stick for me too.”
Her role soon evolved into something deeply meaningful. Patsy tirelessly moves among clients, sharing laughter, tears, and genuine compassion. Her boundless energy allows her to offer critical emotional support, refreshments, and guidance through recovery services. As a Blood Donor Ambassador, she also supports life-saving efforts beyond disaster response.
Don and Patsy first met at work in the 1970s but reconnected later in life, marrying six years ago. Together, they share their home with their beloved cats, Leo, Hobo, and Coco.

Their teamwork is evident in their joint deployment, consistently offering care and kindness to those in crisis. As Don proudly says, "My wife and I roll as a team."
"Helping others in their time of crisis allows us to escape from our day-to-day worries and appreciate the many blessings we often take for granted," Don and Patsy both agree.
The Red Cross is incredibly fortunate to count Patsy and Don among our volunteer community. Their compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment inspire all of us and encourage many more to join our mission of alleviating suffering during times of crisis.
