Leonard Fager has been a Red Cross volunteer for less than a year but he’s already demonstrated remarkable initiative and dedication.

He quickly completed training for the Disaster Action Team (DAT) and has consistently responded to DAT calls for house fires and other emergencies whenever needed, showing both reliability and enthusiasm.

Leonard’s commitment is further evidenced by his decision to purchase a laptop solely for his Red Cross volunteer work, even though he didn't previously own one. This thoughtful investment highlights his desire to be as effective and accessible as possible in his role.

After several DAT calls, Leonard stepped up to train as a Disaster Duty Officer, embracing additional responsibilities without hesitation. It was clear he was ready for more, so he took the initiative to train for the DAT Supervisor position. He recently earned that  title, proving his eagerness to grow and serve.

“I try to go on as many cases as I can to get experience. Now I have put on the shoes of DDO and I find it very rewarding,” Leonard said.

“I really like the feeling of giving to people in need. And above all I couldn't have done this without my wife Nancy's support. She deserves a great big kudos for having to put up with me going to all the scenes and being on duty even in the middle of the night,” he added.

Leonard’s next Red Cross endeavor will be getting involved with sheltering.

“It really brings me much joy being part of the Red Cross,” said Leonard, who served as a Ship Serviceman Third Class Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy from 1992-1996 in Japan.

Leonard’s passion for helping others and willingness to go above and beyond exemplify the values of the Red Cross. He also is active in his church.
