On January 12, dozens of tornadoes with damaging winds touched down across Alabama and Georgia. Many communities were left devasted as trees landed on homes, cars, and local landmarks.
Theresa Settles was one of many affected by the storms that ripped through Griffin, Georgia. When a tree landed on her family’s home, Settles and her mother were forced to pack what they could salvage and leave immediately.
After sleeping in her car for a short period of time, Settles put her “pride aside” and went to an American Red Cross shelter where she knew she would receive the help she was seeking.
“It was the hugs, knowing I would have a balanced meal every day and knowing that I had a safe place with security to lay my head. They even allowed me to cry,” said Settles, “The angels in red and white (Red Cross) showed up and gave me hope”
Feelings of rejection were frequent for Settles as she mentioned that things were hard on her and her family prior to the storms. After both Red Cross shelters where she was staying ended dormitory services, those feelings resurfaced.
After leaving the First United Methodist shelter, Settles arrived at a recovery outreach site where she heard that financial assistance was offered to members of the community. She was able to receive the help she needed along with a list of resources to start her recovery process.
“It took an act of God for me to be humbled,” said Settles “But at this moment, I feel a sense of hope again because of you angels that work for the Red Cross. If it hadn’t been for people like Mr. Gary or even the staff at the shelter, I would have given up.”
