Most items of value have a price tag. Thankfully, the most important component of human life is free to patients in need, thanks to the American Red Cross.
David Clark began donating blood in 1972, two years after a life-changing experience. “In 1970 my wife had complications during childbirth and to save her they had to give her blood. She made it, but we lost our baby,” Clark said. After the procedure was complete, Clark went to inquire about the hospital bill as he was concerned about the cost of the blood that his wife received. When Clark found out the blood was donated for free from the American Red Cross, he was inspired to donate his own blood to patients in need.
Mr. Clark recently celebrated a major milestone with 50 years of being a dedicated blood donor. He has donated 30 gallons of blood in those five decades. His consistency has inspired all four of his children as well as his grandchildren to donate lifesaving blood.
During his many years of being a blood donor, Clark learned that there is a huge need for blood, but unfortunately, only a small percentage of eligible people donate. Blood transfusions are one of the most common hospital procedures in the U.S., yet only 3% of the public gives blood. “You will have such a great feeling after you finally do decide to donate. Just knowing you helped save a life,” said Mr. Clark.
