For the Speciale family, volunteering with the American Red Cross isn’t just something they do, it’s part of who they are.

It’s found in the early mornings, the long days, and the quiet moments of showing up for someone in need. It’s woven into their conversations, their values, and the way they move through the world. Like thousands of Red Cross volunteers across Illinois—who make up more than 90% of our workforce—the Speciale family lives out what it means to serve with heart. Together, they reflect the very best of our mission in action.

Sam has been serving “as long as I was able to,” stepping into roles at food drives, blood drives, disaster responses, and the Chicago Marathon. Even when it means waking up at 3:00 a.m., he shows up. His reason is simple and powerful: “I just want people to have a better day.” Whether offering comfort to someone who has lost everything or quietly supporting behind the scenes, Sam brings a steady presence that reminds people they are not alone.

Nathan began volunteering more than a decade ago, witnessing firsthand how the Red Cross supports families after devastating home fires. That experience stayed with him. Today, in addition to serving in the National Guard, he continues to lead and serve at major events like the Chicago Marathon and is preparing to run it himself for Team Red Cross. Guided by the belief that “the time is always right to do what is right,” Nathan lives that truth through action, again and again.

Katlyn discovered her passion at blood drives, where a kind word or reassuring smile can make all the difference for a first-time donor. She helps others feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger than themselves. Now studying sociology and psychology at Bradley University, she continues that work on campus, building connections and inviting others into service. For Katlyn, volunteering is both a grounding force and a source of hope.
