“We are so grateful to be alive, and we appreciate all the support we got from the Red Cross.” — Luis Aguilera
Luis Aguilera and Wilfredo Rivera had shared many everyday moments as neighbors, but nothing prepared them for the night their lives changed forever. Just days after Thanksgiving, a massive fire tore through their apartment complex in Carpentersville, Illinois, turning a freezing night into a fight for survival.
Luis remembers the moment it began. His wife noticed heavy smoke outside their third‑floor window. “We knew right away it had to be a fire. The smoke was very thick. We evacuated quickly and ran out with nothing, just the clothes on our bodies and my wallet.”
His first instinct was to find his neighbor, Wilfredo. Once they confirmed each other was safe, they didn’t hesitate. Together, they began pounding on doors to wake sleeping residents. “Most people were asleep; the fire broke out at 12:45 a.m. We went door by door with all our might to make sure our neighbors heard us and got out safely,” Wilfredo said.
When everyone finally made it outside, the reality hit hard. “We saw how everything was destroyed in minutes. Our priority was to survive, but then you realize your whole life is being consumed by flames. That hurts. It’s not just the material things, it’s the sentimental items you can never get back,” Wilfredo shared.
Amid the devastation, a sign of hope appeared: Red Cross volunteers arriving with calm, steady support. “We didn’t know the volunteers were giving their own time. Their presence showed us we were not alone,” Luis said.
The American Red Cross responds to an emergency every 8 minutes. From small house fires to multi-state natural disasters, we are there wherever we’re needed, so people can have clean water, safe shelter and hot meals when they need them most.
Before that night, neither neighbor knew what the Red Cross offered after a multi‑family fire. “I wasn’t aware of the assistance available. At first, I didn’t want to ask for help because I’m usually the one helping others. But it was such a relief to know that this time, someone was also there for us,” Wilfredo added.
Luis and Wilfredo say they quickly learned that small acts like a warm meal, a blanket, clear information, or simply a listening ear make all the difference in the world. For them, the Red Vest became more than help, it became a steady voice, a guiding hand, and in those fragile moments, it became hope.
Home fires are the nation’s most frequent disaster. That’s why the American Red Cross and our partners are preparing families to act quickly through our Home Fire Campaign. We have already made a lifesaving difference, achieving our initial goals of installing 2.5 million free smoke alarms and helping to make 1 million households safer in at-risk communities.
