Red Cross volunteers across the Kentucky Region visited communities in Fall 2023 to help install more than 1,300 free smoke alarms and make more than 500 homes safer as part of our Sound the Alarm events.

"With the help of Red Cross and other agencies, we opened a free grocery store in one of the small communities in the county.” Our Red Cross Community Adaptation Program has allowed House on the Hill to advance service to communities in Warren County.
Bluegrass Area Chapter board members volunteered their time to decorate the new Fisher House, built in April 2023. The Fisher House offers a place to stay for anyone receiving care at the VA Center outside of a 50-mile radius.
In 2024, the Kentucky Region trained more than 1,000 people in hands-only CPR! Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the U.S.- taking the lives of more than 350,000 Americans each year.
Communities across Kentucky and Southern Indiana were impacted by tornadoes and severe weather. Red Cross volunteers assisted 80 people across the region and helped with damage assessment, casework, emotional support, and distribution of clean-up kits.
News Story: Atlanta Born, Louisville Inspired: Dr. Ricky Jones
Dr. Ricky Jones originated the Pan-African studies sickle cell blood drive at the University of Louisville in honor of his friend, Kerry. Kerry was born with sickle cell disease, and doctors did not think he would live past 16 years old.
Severe storms impacted communities across Western Kentucky over Memorial Day weekend. Our volunteers visited communities in Logan County, Hopkins County, and other communities, delivering water, snacks and cleanup supplies.

News Story: Yolanda Evans: The Unspoken Battles of Sickle Cell Trait
It was after an accident in Yolanda’s teens that she learned she had sickle cell trait. Yolanda has taken her knowledge about sickle cell trait and become an advocate.
One of our proud Community Adaptation Program partnerships is with the International Center of Kentucky (ICoKY). The ICoKY has helped resettle over 10,000 refugees from over 30 different countries.

Sisters Tenley and Adley were diagnosed with the same cancer at young ages. Combined, the girls received over 100 blood product transfusions during treatment.
