Keerat Handa’s dedication to helping others has become a defining part of his life. A volunteer with the American Red Cross, Handa has embraced roles that place him at the heart of disaster response: being there for people in their most vulnerable moments.
After graduating from college and beginning his career, Handa felt compelled to spend his weekends giving back to his community.
“I came across the Red Cross Club at Michigan State University, but I wasn't active at all. I just knew that the Red Cross did blood services,” Handa said. “So, I decided that I was going to volunteer for the Red Cross and started as a biomedical volunteer.”
In December 2023, Handa became a transportation specialist, delivering blood to Red Cross hospital partners across Michigan. Several months later, he started a Master of Business Administration program, which allowed him the flexibility to deepen his involvement with the Red Cross.
Eager to interact directly with clients, Handa transitioned into disaster services, gradually taking on more roles and responsibilities.
“I wanted to be out there, to be boots on the ground,” Handa said. “Being able to make a difference, show compassion, hug our clients, and let them know we’ll be there in their time of need—that’s what keeps me going. That’s why I’m still here, and more and more involved.”
Over the past year, he has steadily increased his volunteer hours, now dedicating about 30 hours each week. For him, it’s not just about providing assistance; it’s about giving hope.
“Whenever I'm out in the community, the vest that I wear gives them a signal of hope that Red Cross is here to help,” Handa said.
Among Handa’s most memorable experiences was responding to a home fire in Macomb, located about 38 miles north of Detroit. He arrived on the scene while the fire was still active, witnessing firsthand the devastation of a family who had lost everything. The family, sitting on a neighbor's lawn, watched helplessly as their home and cars were destroyed.
“Just being able to respond, without telling them what services and relief we could provide but being a shoulder for them to talk to and showing empathy and compassion to every single family member from a minor to senior citizen, that’s what keeps me going.”
While Handa’s passion for volunteering is driven by a desire to help others, he’s also gained valuable professional skills through his volunteer work.
“The Red Cross does a really good job at recognizing their volunteers and being able to cater to a volunteer’s needs, interests, and passions.”
As Handa continues to dedicate his time as a Red Cross volunteer, his commitment to responding to calls for help remains unwavering. For him, each volunteer shift is a chance to make a real impact on someone’s life.
