In an emergency, it is the blood products — already on the shelves — that help save the lives of children, parents, grandparents, friends, neighbors and strangers alike. What’s more, with a steady rise in cancer cases — an estimated 36% by 2040 — so grows the need for platelets. This essential blood product, with only a five-day shelf life, helps strengthen patients’ ability to fight and survive cancer, chronic diseases and traumatic injuries.
As the largest provider of blood products in the U.S., the American Red Cross is uniquely positioned and staunchly dedicated to meeting the growing and evolving need for blood products by adapting and innovating, as we have done for more than a century. To meet the growing demand for blood products, we are poised to open 100 new Blood Donation Centers across the country by 2030.
The Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Region plays a vital role in this work. That’s why we are taking bold action to build new blood donation centers across our region. These new, strategic locations offer more consistent and convenient opportunities for current and new blood donors to give, helping us meet the growing need for platelets and other blood products. We are also harnessing cutting-edge innovations to deliver lifesaving blood products — safely and efficiently — to people in need.
The Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania plays an essential role in delivering lifesaving blood to patients in the Philadelphia area. Last year alone, we delivered more than 270,000 blood products to 38 local hospitals and cancer treatment centers.
However, like other communities across the country, the Red Cross has experienced extraordinary volatility in the supply and demand of blood products throughout the pandemic and beyond. Among other factors:
To fulfill this work — essential to the health and resiliency of the Philadelphia area — the Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Region will spend millions of dollars, which will be invested in:
The new Blood Donation Centers are already open in Horsham and West Chester, with locations in
East Norriton and Langhorne expected to be operational in late 2024.
