American Red Cross of South Carolina Celebrates Long-Standing partnership with BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina

Story told by: Nick Gibson
For several decades, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina (BlueCross) has steadfastly supported the American Red Cross of South Carolina through partnership, blood donation, and financially supporting our humanitarian mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.
“BlueCross has had a relationship with the Red Cross for well over 30 years now. We’ve always seen the Red Cross as one of the most important philanthropic organizations in the state,” said Bruce Hughes, President of Celerian Group, a division of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. “Particularly as a health insurer, we recognize the importance of supporting health care for the state. We are certainly glad to be able to work with the Red Cross.”
The Red Cross recently hosted the BlueCross team at the Columbia Chapter for a day to honor our long-lasting partnership. We shared updates on how their support has enabled lifesaving programs across lines of service including disaster response, training services, service to Armed Forces and blood services.
Our biomedical team gave a lab tour to BlueCross team members to show how blood is distributed to patients in need. After the mission updates, several guests generously rolled up their sleeves to share the gift of life by donating blood.
“I started my first donation in college when they would do the Carolina-Clemson blood drive, so my competitive side is what got me started,” said Serena Olivi, instructional developer at BlueCross. “I think the routine of it is what helps.”
Olivi encourages anyone interested in donating blood to bring a friend so they can donate together. Donors can safely give blood every 56 days, up to six times a year, and she tries to donate as often as possible.
BlueCross will continue the partnership, encouraging employees to donate blood, Hughes said.
“We recognize the importance of the blood supply. Our employees donated 540 units of blood last year,” said Hughes. “We provide the opportunity for our employees to donate blood because we think it’s important.”
About 62% of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood but only about 3% donates. Eligible individuals are encouraged to schedule a blood or platelet donation appointment by using the Red Cross Blood Donor app, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800- RED-CROSS (800-733-2767).
