The Big Country community took shelter from this summer’s heatwave to donate blood in the cool sanctuary of the Culture Hall in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in central Abilene.
“My hope for hosting a blood drive in Abilene was to increase awareness of the need for the community to support the American Red Cross with their mission of providing life-saving blood to those in critical need,” said Kristy McDonough, the American Red Cross Big Country Chapter Board President. “The people in Abilene are very charitable and want to help their neighbors. I can’t think of a better way than by giving blood.”
Robert Vermillion, a first-time donor, was encouraged to visit the drive by his mother. “It’s a good opportunity to give and help others in need,” said Vermillion, resting after his donation.
Sisters Bradshaw and Mullin, members of the Latter-day Saints community, handled the welcome and registration table. Being in service to others is a daily goal for volunteer missionaries. “It’s important to get involved and integrated into local communities,” said Sister Bradshaw. “It’s all about building relationships.”
“Nowadays, there are a lot of people in need,” said Sister Mullen. According to the Red Cross, someone needs a blood or platelet transfusion every two seconds nationwide. With only about 3 percent of age-eligible donors giving, there is always a need. A single donation can save more than one life.
Sadie Davis, a long-time donor, was on vacation visiting family in the Big Country area when she received a call from the Red Cross notifying her of the drive. “I enjoy donating,” said Davis, who finds the experience “calming and relaxing.” After her first positive experience giving blood during high school, Davis tries to attend a drive whenever she can. “I’d recommend everyone to donate,” said Davis.
