Home fires are the most frequent disaster in the United States, claiming more lives each year than all other disasters combined. Studies show you have just two minutes to safely escape from a home in the event of a fire. Working smoke alarms are the first line of defense in protecting families from this common disaster.
A functioning smoke alarm can significantly improve a household’s chance of escaping a fire. Alarms provide an early warning that gives families extra time to get out when every second counts. By taking steps in advance, families can prepare to prevent fires and respond quickly if one occurs.
Besides installing smoke alarms on every sleeping level of the home, both inside and outside, the American Red Cross recommends families follow these safety tips:
If you know or suspect a fire is in progress, the following tips can save your life:
It is important to educate children on what to do when an emergency happens. The Red Cross has a preparedness education program for grades K-3 called “Prepare with Pedro” that teaches students how to BE PREPARED and TAKE ACTION for either home fires or a local hazard.
This educational program includes free downloads of course books, activities, teacher’s guides, and videos. Parents may use the materials to teach at home or contact their local Red Cross chapter to find nearby classes.
The Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness campaign has saved over 2,000 lives nationwide since its launch. Through this program, volunteers install free smoke alarms and share fire safety education with families across the country.
If you cannot afford to purchase smoke alarms or are physically unable to install a smoke alarm, the Red Cross may be able to help. Request a smoke alarm installation today.
By taking precautions, families are better prepared to prevent home fires and respond effectively if one happens. For more information and resources, visit the Red Cross Home Fire Safety page or call 1-800 RED CROSS.
