A massive six-alarm fire broke out on the afternoon of Monday, June 23, at The Cooper apartments, a multi-story apartment complex on Rosedale Street in the Near Southside neighborhood in Fort Worth. Everyone evacuated safely, but the fire displaced some 830 residents.
The American Red Cross responded early in the afternoon, opening a shelter that evening, and continues to assist displaced residents. Community members have also mobilized, creating online donation sites to provide meals, household goods, furniture, bottled drinks and snacks.
Ashley and Abraham, residents of the third floor, expressed their gratitude for the Red Cross’s efforts. “The Red Cross has been so much help, so we really want to thank them,” they said.
Ashley, who was home with their dog, MaMa, first noticed something was wrong when the pet began coughing. Moments later, smoke filled the apartment. Ashley quickly evacuated with MaMa, unable to gather any belongings. By Friday, they had moved into a new apartment and were beginning to process the experience of losing their home.
The blaze began as a three-alarm fire on the roof of Building 1 and quickly escalated, ultimately requiring 170 firefighters and 64 pieces of equipment to contain it. Investigators have determined the cause to be accidental, stemming from an electrical system failure. The investigation remains ongoing.
