Every day, thousands of patients rely on blood donations to support lifesaving treatments.
Among those, platelet donations remain a much-needed form of blood donation. Unlike whole blood, platelets have a short shelf life and are especially needed by patients undergoing cancer treatment, major surgeries and other medical procedures.
Rheyn Juwono, a philanthropy coordinator from the Youth Services Philanthropy Committee, recognized this cause. After feeling the ramifications of cancer in her own family, she wanted to promote platelet donation to new donors, particularly teens.
This is why she initiated The Platelets Pledge, a three-month-long campaign in the North Texas Region. This campaign highlights platelet donations and raises awareness of the need for blood and funds for the Red Cross Blood Services.
Throughout the campaign, youth volunteers partnered with Red Cross Clubs across North Texas to educate their communities about the importance of platelet donations and to raise funds to support Red Cross Blood Services.
More than 50 members have committed to this cause, empowering patients receiving transfusions for chronic illnesses. Red Cross clubs across North Texas have raised money through events like car washes and bake sales, showing how neighbors come together to help their neighbors.
The campaign raised more than $7,000 for Red Cross Blood Services and engaged youth volunteers across the region in advocacy efforts. Committee members also created and distributed awareness ribbons to recognize platelet donors and encourage conversations about the impact of platelet donation.
The phlebotomists shared some touching platelet donation stories. One of their recurring donors, who lost his wife to cancer, comes to donate platelets every month as a way to give back.
As the Philanthropy Committee continues expanding, this campaign serves as a reminder that even a single platelet donation can make a lifesaving difference for patients.
The Philanthropy Committee plans to continue this mission this fall, with goals to expand during its second year, and calls on everyone to support the fundraiser by visiting the Donor Drive and searching for the Platelet Pledge.
No matter the amount, every donation helps bring the gift of life to a patient in need.
