LAS VEGAS (June 19, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada invites the community to commemorate World Sickle Cell Day by donating blood. Blood donations from self-identified Black donors are tested for the sickle cell trait, helping to identify compatible blood types and provide critical support to patients battling sickle cell disease.
“Testing for the sickle cell trait during blood donation allows us to quickly find the best matches for patients with sickle cell disease,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “These donations are essential for providing the lifesaving care that sickle cell patients depend on.”
Addressing the Needs of Patients with Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease affects more than 100,000 people across the United States, with the majority being of African descent. For these patients, regular blood transfusions are vital to managing severe pain and preventing life-threatening complications. The Red Cross of Southern Nevada is committed to fostering a diverse blood supply to meet the unique needs of these patients.
While donors of all ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to give, African American donors often possess unique blood traits that make their donations the best match for patients with sickle cell disease. Seasonal changes can worsen symptoms of the disease, leading to pain crises and an increased need for blood transfusions. “Patients with sickle cell disease should never have to worry about the availability of closely matched blood products for their treatment,” Flanigan added.
Support Those with Sickle Cell Disease
Donors of all blood types are encouraged to schedule an appointment by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcross.org/GiveBlood or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
As a thank-you, donors who give blood between June 1-30, 2025, will automatically be entered into the Summertime of Giving Sweepstakes for a chance to win one of two $7,000 gift cards. Additionally, donors will receive a $15 Amazon.com gift card by email as a token of appreciation. Terms apply. Visit RedCrossBlood.org/June for details.
