By Taylor Poisall, American Red Cross
For the past 15 years, Steve Rogers has shown up for patients he will never meet, donating platelets and helping ensure lifesaving blood products are available when they're needed most.
A familiar face at the American Red Cross Blood Donation Center in Turlock, Steve has made blood donation a regular part of his life and service to others.
Recently, he reached an extraordinary milestone: 438 platelet donations. Each donation represents time, dedication and a steadfast commitment to helping people facing cancer treatments, surgeries, traumatic injuries and other serious medical conditions.
But Steve's impact extends far beyond the donor chair.
As a Red Cross Blood Donor Ambassador, he welcomes donors with a smile, helps put first-time visitors at ease and creates a positive experience that encourages people to return. He understands that every person who walks through the door has the potential to help save lives.
During a recent volunteer shift, Steve noticed something concerning: donor turnout was lower than usual, even as the need for blood remained urgent. Earlier this summer, the American Red Cross had declared only the second national blood supply crisis in its history after blood donations fell to a four-year summer low, threatening the availability of lifesaving blood products for patients across the country.
Rather than simply continue his volunteer duties, Steve stepped into the donor chair himself and made a platelet donation.
That decision reflects the spirit of service that has defined Steve's Red Cross journey for the past 15 years.
Whether he's greeting donors, encouraging others to give or making a lifesaving donation of his own, Steve leads by example. His dedication is a powerful reminder that one person can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of countless others.
