Teresa Beall narrowly missed one of the deadliest and most destructive wildfires in the history of California. 

Just before the 2018 Camp Fire, Teresa and her family relocated to nearby Chico. As the wildfire swept through Paradise and surrounding areas, residents faced unimaginable loss and uncertainty, with entire neighborhoods forever changed. 

"Although we were fortunate to have relocated, we had friends who lost everything. I wanted to help my community.” 

That motivation to support her neighbors led her to volunteer with the American Red Cross. When she arrived at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds to assist survivors of the Camp Fire, she quickly discovered the breadth of services the organization provides during disasters. Initially welcomed as an event-based volunteer, she soon wanted to take on a larger role. 

“I was onboarded as a general volunteer. Then, after completing extensive coursework and training in a variety of areas, I began deploying regionally and eventually nationally.” 

What began as a local act of service soon became a long-term commitment. Nearly 30 deployments later, Beall has supported disaster relief operations in more than 12 states and four U.S. territories.  

For Beall, the moment reinforced a lesson she has seen repeated in communities across the country: even after nature's fiercest storms, hope, determination and community endure. 

Whether responding to wildfires in California, hurricanes along the Gulf Coast or typhoons in the Pacific, she has seen people come together again and again to support one another through unimaginable loss. 

While many of her responsibilities during disaster responses focus on information and planning, logistics and workforce support, she says the most meaningful part of her role is providing comfort to people facing uncertainty after losing their homes. 

“For me, deploying with the American Red Cross is about much more than clearing debris or providing assistance with sheltering, feeding and distribution of supplies. It is about standing beside people during one of the most difficult moments of their lives and reminding them that they are not alone. I am grateful to be a small part of these mission efforts.” 

For someone whose journey began in the aftermath of the Camp Fire, her commitment to service is stronger than ever. From Chico to Saipan, Beall has discovered that recovery is about more than rebuilding homes and infrastructure. It is about restoring hope, strengthening communities and reminding people that they do not have to face disaster alone.
