The American Red Cross Women, Infants & Children program in San Diego is a supplemental nutrition assistance program that aims to improve the nutrition and health of pregnant and postpartum individuals as well as children up to age five. WIC provides healthy foods, nutrition education for parents and caregivers, breastfeeding support from trained professionals, and referrals to community resources like health care and social services.
The WIC and American Red Cross partnership was developed when the WIC program was initiated in the state of California in 1974. Red Cross nursing personnel were working with pregnant, inner city teens and saw that the administration of WIC services seemed like a perfect way to assist families in need.
Today, WIC serves more than 1 in 2 children in California. In San Diego, our agency provides services to about 17,000 families each month. We also support military families, many of whom qualify for WIC. WIC is available regardless of race, color, sex or national origin, and U.S. citizenship is not required to participate. While most appointments are over the phone, we do have in-person options for some appointments.
