General Randy A. George assumed duties as the 41^st Chief of Staff of the Army on September 21, 2023, after most recently serving as the 38^th Vice Chief of Staff of the Army.

George commissioned from the U.S. Military Academy in 1988 as an infantry officer. He served as a lieutenant in the 101^st Airborne Division and deployed in support of Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Following the Armor Officer Advanced Course in 1993, George was stationed at Fort Carson where he was the assistant operations officer for the 3rd Brigade, 4^th Infantry Division and then commanded C Company and later Headquarters Company in 1^st Battalion, 8^th Infantry Regiment. 

George received his Master of Science in Economics in 1999 from Colorado School of Mines and then served at the National Simulation Center in Fort Leavenworth before attending the Command and General Staff College.

In 2001, George went to Italy and served as the executive officer of the 2^nd Battalion, 503^rd Infantry Regiment, 173^rd Airborne Brigade. He was later executive officer and then deputy commander of the brigade, during which time he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Returning to the 101^st Airborne Division in 2004, George commanded 1^st Battalion, 187^th Infantry Regiment and deployed a second time to Iraq. He then went to United States Naval War College as an instructor and then student. He deployed again as part of the initiatives group for the commanding general, Multi-National Corps-Iraq in 2007.

In 2008 George returned to the 4^th Infantry Division, where he commanded the 4^th Brigade Combat Team and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Following command, he was a fellow on the Council of Foreign Relations, chief of the strategic policy division for the Pakistan-Afghanistan coordination cell on the Joint Staff, executive officer to the 33^rd Vice Chief of Staff of the Army and then executive assistant to the commander of U.S. Central Command. He then returned to Fort Carson as the deputy commanding general (maneuver) of the 4^th Infantry Division.

After two staff assignments as the director of force management for the Army G-3/5/7 and deputy director for regional operations and force management in the J-3, George took command of the 4^th Infantry Division in June 2017. In this role he deployed again to Afghanistan.

George’s most recent command was of I Corps at Joint Base Lewis McChord, after which he served as the senior military assistant to the Secretary of Defense.

He is married to his West Point classmate, Patty. They have two children, Grant and Andrea.

Patricia "Patty" Ann Abt George has spent the past 32 years balancing a dynamic life as a professional, mother, and dedicated volunteer in support of Soldier & Family Readiness Groups (SFRGs). Her involvement began as a Point of Contact at the Company level, before the advent of cell phones and the rise of the Internet, and evolved to the Corps level, where she served as a Senior Spouse Advisor. She is married to General Randy George, the current Chief of Staff of the Army.

Among her many contributions to SFRGs, Patty helped develop a deployment readiness workshop for families titled Standing Ready Standing Strong, as well as a reintegration workshop designed to prepare spouses and families for their soldiers’ return from combat. While stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, she played a key role in conceptualizing Mountain Post Living, a community-wide initiative aimed at coordinating wellness agencies and resources to promote healthy living. At Joint Base Lewis-McChord, she helped organize a wellness exposition for spouses and families and championed a Senior Leader and Spouse Command Team Orientation Program.

Patty holds a Bachelor of Science degree from West Point (1988) and a Master of Education from Vanderbilt University (1992). She and Randy have been married for 33 years, have relocated 17 times, and are proud parents of two children and one doodle dog. Their son Grant served in the Army for six years and now works for Boston Consulting Group in Chicago. Their daughter Andie, a graduate of William & Mary, also resides in Chicago, where she serves as a Strategic Operations Manager for Uber Eats Corporate.

During her own military service as a Military Intelligence Officer, Patty deployed with the 101^st Airborne (Air Assault) Division in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. A self-described “Jill of Many Trades,” her professional journey has included roles as a fitness instructor, computer teacher, math teacher, executive assistant to an HR director, and health promotions coordinator. She currently works as an Orange Theory Fitness coach and at a design store in Alexandria, Virginia.

In addition to her professional endeavors, Patty finds deep fulfillment in community service, most recently volunteering with Food & Friends. With each move across the country and around the world, she has embraced the unpredictability of military life. Though it often keeps her slightly off balance, it is precisely this rhythm of change that propels her forward - corners and all.
