MIAMI (April 10, 2019) – The Greater Miami & The Keys Chapter of the American Red Cross along with partners installed more than 100 free smoke alarms on Saturday, April 6 at the Island Life Village community in Key West, Fla.
The home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event was sponsored by The Helmerich Trust and is part of a two-week push of Sound the Alarm events in 100 cities across the U.S.
Red Cross volunteers along with local partners like The Helmerich Trust, the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys and Key West, Suburban Propane and local community leaders visited homes throughout Stock Island and educated families on home fire safety.
Following the installations, community partners and volunteers enjoyed a barbecue generously hosted by Suburban Propane.
“Every day, seven people die in home fires, most victims die in homes that don’t have working smoke alarms. The Red Cross wants to do everything we can to prevent these needless tragedies,” said Deborah Koch, executive director of the Greater Miami and the Keys Chapter. “This is one of six events that our chapter will be hosting with the goal of saving lives and educating people about home fire safety.”
Across the country, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign is helping save lives by installing free smoke alarms in homes that don’t have them and by educating people about fire safety. So far, it has reached more than 1.7 million people and saved more than 520 lives nationwide.
