It’s been years since Lowndes County has experienced weather with an aftermath that would leave the community and its residents devastated.
Long-time Valdosta residents JaTaryia and Quinncy Thomas have experienced three hurricanes but none as impactful as Hurricane Idalia which made landfall in the Southeast on August 30. Unfortunately, their entire family was home at the time of the storm.
“Trees just kept falling,” JaTaryia said. “We grabbed what we could and just got out of the house. We really needed to just get off the block.”
Hundreds of American Red Cross staff and volunteers have been on the ground in Florida and Georgia working countless hours to assist families who, like the Thomas’, have been affected by Hurricane Idalia.
“Looking ahead, we plan to make our house feel like home again,” said Quinncy. The Thomas’ also have plans to be more proactive in preparing for storms ahead during hurricane season. “We really feel the need to have a tree or two cut down.”
The Red Cross will continue to provide comfort, support, and relief to Florida and Georgia’s residents impacted by Hurricane Idalia. “People that need the help don’t often know where they can get the help,” said JaTaryia. “Of course, we wouldn’t want to be in a disaster area but we’re thankful for the Red Cross just being here.”
