Furry friends bring smiles to Boise VA veterans through the Red Cross Animal Visitation Program.
This Veterans Day, the Red Cross of Idaho and East Oregon proudly celebrates all veterans and active-duty service members. From the moment service members join the military and for the rest of their lives, the Red Cross stands beside these brave men and women and their families — offering support, comfort and care through every chapter of their service journey.
“At the Red Cross, we are honored to stand with our nation’s heroes — not just on Veterans Day, but every day,” said Sheila Warner, Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces regional program manager. “Whether it’s reuniting a service member with their family during an emergency or helping families cope with a difficult deployment, we make sure they’re not alone.”
Across Idaho and Eastern Oregon, the Red Cross provides critical programs that serve military members, veterans and their families. Last year alone, the Red Cross supported more than 9,700 military families.
Through the Red Cross Hero Care Network, deployed service members can stay connected with loved ones back home. The Red Cross facilitates emergency communications, helping service members return home for major life events such as the birth of a child or a funeral.
The Red Cross also helps military families build resilience during times of separation and transition. Resiliency workshops teach practical tools for managing stress, strengthening communication and fostering emotional well-being throughout the challenges of military life.
In Boise, veterans can experience a special kind of comfort through the Red Cross Animal Visitation Program, where service dogs deliver “puppy love” and companionship to veterans at the Boise VA Medical Center.
Many veterans also continue to serve their communities as Red Cross volunteers, giving back to others who have walked similar paths.
“The Red Cross mission to support those who serve is deeply rooted in our history,” Warner said. “We are proud to stand with our nation’s heroes and their families.”
