[NEW ORLEANS/BATON ROUGE/SHREVEPORT, LA] June 17, 2026 — The American Red Cross Louisiana Region is mobilizing disaster teams and urging residents to take immediate precautions as a slow-moving tropical storm could trigger severe, weeklong heavy rainfall and life-threatening flash flooding threat across the state.
Repeated rounds of intense tropical rainfall are expected to impact communities from the Gulf Coast up through central and northern parts of the state, with some areas facing the potential for widespread urban and river flooding.
"Our teams are already on the ground, coordinating with local emergency management officials and positioning resources to respond," said Kenneth St. Charles Ph.D., Regional Chief Executive Officer for the American Red Cross Louisiana Region. "We urge families across Louisiana to use this time to secure their homes, check on vulnerable neighbors, and review their emergency evacuation routes."
Flash Flood Watches are currently in effect for much of the state, with significant impacts predicted as the storm pushes bands of heavy rain inland.
In the central and northern parishes, regional leadership is preparing for localized flooding that could cut off vulnerable rural communities.
"When the skies darken, Louisiana’s neighbor-helping-neighbor spirit shines," said Karen McCoy, Executive Director of the American Red Cross North Louisiana Chapter. "Our incredible volunteers are already on the ground, preparing to open shelters if needed. We ae encouraging everyone to pack your emergency go-kit, double-check your safety plans, and ensure you have a way to get safety alerts tonight so we can all weather this storm together."
Further south and west, teams are preparing for rapid water accumulation in low-lying areas and urban corridors.
We are tracking this system very closely as it moves inland," said Micah Nicholas, Executive Director of the Capital Area West Chapter. " While the forecast continues to evolve, our biggest concern right now is the potential for repeated rounds of heavy rainfall and flash flooding. We’re encouraging everyone across the Capital Area, Acadiana, and Southwest Louisiana to prepare now by packing an emergency go kit, having multiple ways to receive weather alerts, and making the decision today to never drive through flooded roadways."
