LAS VEGAS (June 14, 2025) — The American Red Cross is proud to celebrate World Blood Donor Day on June 14 by thanking the selfless individuals who donate blood and platelets—saving lives every day. This global observance raises awareness of the need for a safe and reliable blood supply while honoring volunteer donors for their vital role in patient care.
Blood donations tend to decline in late spring and early summer—especially around holiday weekends like Memorial Day and Independence Day. That trend continued last month when the Red Cross collected fewer donations than needed to maintain a stable national blood supply. As the summer progresses, severe weather and record-breaking travel may continue to challenge donation efforts.
“World Blood Donor Day is a moment to thank our incredible blood and platelet donors and remind others just how critical their role is in saving lives,” said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region. “Every donation helps ensure patients across the country receive the care they need—especially during the challenging summer months.”
Donors are urgently needed to help ensure hospitals have the blood and platelets they need for patients undergoing surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma care, and more.
Only about 3% of eligible Americans donate blood, making blood donors a uniquely generous and impactful group. The Red Cross encourages those who are eligible to step up, roll up a sleeve, and donate this summer.

Additional height and weight requirements apply to donors 18 and younger.
