LAS VEGAS (July 19, 2025) — This summer, making a lifesaving impact with the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada could be the ticket to seeing a new summer blockbuster. From July 15 through July 31, 2025, Southern Nevadans who donate blood will receive a Fandango movie ticket as a thank-you for helping patients in need and supporting the nation’s blood supply.
Donating blood is a simple act with a powerful purpose—it helps trauma victims, cancer patients and those undergoing surgeries get the care they need. Plus, it’s a chance to do something heroic while enjoying a little summer fun with a free movie ticket.
“Donating blood is one of the simplest ways to make a profound impact on the community,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “Every donation helps ensure that hospitals and patients have the resources they need, whether it’s for emergency care, surgeries or ongoing treatments. It’s a small act of kindness that strengthens the entire community.”
The Urgent Need for Type O Blood
While all blood types are essential, the demand for type O blood is especially urgent. Type O positive is the most commonly transfused blood type, as about 85% of the population can receive it. Type O negative, the universal blood type, is critical in emergencies when there isn’t time to determine a patient’s blood type.
How to Donate
Donors can conveniently schedule an appointment using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting redcross.org/GiveBlood or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). All who come to give blood between July 15 and July 31, 2025, will receive a Fandango Movie Reward by email. For more details, visit RedCrossBlood.org/July.
The process of donating blood is quick and impactful. From registration to refreshments, the entire process takes about an hour, with the actual blood donation lasting about 10 minutes.
Summer Blood Donors Needed
Summer presents unique challenges for maintaining a steady blood supply. With schools—key donation sites—on break and regular donors traveling, blood donations often decline during this time. Meanwhile, the “100 Deadly Days of Summer,” the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, sees an increase in travel and outdoor activities, often leading to a rise in accidents and medical emergencies requiring blood transfusions.
The Red Cross plays a critical role in meeting this demand, collecting 40% of the nation’s blood supply to support more than 2,500 hospitals and transfusion centers. To meet these needs, the Red Cross must collect approximately 12,500 blood donations and 3,000 platelet donations every day. In Southern Nevada, nearly 20 hospitals rely on the Red Cross for their blood supply.
