RENO, Nev. (Sept. 8, 2024) — The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada will continue to operate an evacuation shelter at the Senior Center, located at 1155 E. 9th St., in Reno, as more than 7,500 homes and businesses remain without power, and high winds continue to fan the Davis Fire Sunday afternoon.
“We’re here to give our community the support and resources they need,” said Tiandra Rushing, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Nevada Chapter. “Our amazing volunteers and staff are working with local groups, first responders, and government agencies to ensure everyone stays safe during this wildfire.” Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada and Slim Chicken generously provided meals on Sunday to support the evacuees.
The shelter can accommodate small animals, managed by Washoe County Animal Services, allowing evacuees to bring their pets and reduce stress during this challenging time. Evacuated residents with large animals can take them to the University of Nevada Equestrian Center in Reno or Fuji Park in Carson City.
“Ensuring that pets have a safe place to stay during evacuations is crucial. It brings peace of mind to pet owners and allows them to focus on their own safety,” Rushing said. “Dogs, cats, and other pets are part of the family, so it’s important to include them in emergency preparedness plans.”
Finding a shelter
The Red Cross reminds everyone that it is critical to listen to the advice of local authorities and evacuate immediately if instructed. For those who have already evacuated, don’t return home until officials say it is safe to do so. Those needing assistance can visit redcross.org/shelter or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (800-733-2767).
Anyone coming to a Red Cross should bring personal items for each family member, including prescription medications, clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents, and comfort items. It’s also important to bring special items for children, such as diapers, formula, toys and other items for family members who have unique needs.
