RENO, Nev. (Aug. 12, 2024) — The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada will maintain an evacuation shelter at the Northwest Reno Library, located at 2325 Robb Dr., as more than 6,000 homes are currently without power and residences outside of Verdi remain under possible threat from the uncontained Gold Ranch Fire.
Red Cross staff and volunteers are providing safe shelter for those affected by the wildfire. We are working with Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada and Slim Chicken, which are supplying meals for those at the evacuation shelter.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone affected by the Gold Ranch Fire,” Tiandra Rushing, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Nevada Chapter. “We are committed to providing essential services and support to help our community through this challenging period.”
The shelter will accommodate small animals, managed by Washoe County Animal Services, allowing evacuees to bring their pets and relieving one of the many stresses they are currently facing. Evacuated residents with livestock should contact Washoe County Animal Services at 775-322-3647.
“Ensuring that pets have a safe place to stay during evacuations is crucial. It brings peace of mind to pet owners and allows them to focus on their own safety,” Rushing said. “Dogs, cats and other pets are an important part of any family, so it is equally important to include them in the family emergency preparedness plan.”
Finding a shelter
The Red Cross reminds everyone that it is critical to listen to the advice of local authorities and evacuate immediately if asked to do so. For those who have already evacuated, don’t return home until officials say it is safe to do so. People in need of assistance can visit redcross.org/shelter or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (800-733-2767).
Anyone coming to a Red Cross shelter should try to bring personal items for each family member, including prescription and emergency medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and other comfort items. It’s also important to bring special items for children, such as diapers, formula, and toys, and other items for family members who have unique needs.

Gold Ranch Fire
The wildfire ignited Sunday near Verdi, caused by winds spreading a car fire to nearby dry brush. The fire has burned nearly 675 acres and is being battled by about 200 firefighters from local, state and federal agencies. People are asked to avoid the area as spectators have impeded firefighters and other responders.
