LAS VEGAS (March 21, 2025) — U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford will honor the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in celebration of Red Cross Month. This special recognition will be presented to Red Cross staff and volunteers on Saturday, March 22, at 9 a.m. during a blood drive at the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1189 Hassell Ave., Las Vegas.
This Congressional recognition highlights the strong partnership between Nevadans and the Red Cross of Southern Nevada, emphasizing a shared commitment to building a resilient community prepared for emergencies. Rep. Horsford, who represents Nevada’s Fourth Congressional District, has expressed deep appreciation for the Red Cross volunteers in Nevada who help their neighbors during emergencies, as well as blood donors who contribute to saving lives.
Since its inception in 1943 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Red Cross Month has been a time to honor those who give back through the American Red Cross. Every president since has upheld the tradition, recognizing the organization’s vital role in supporting communities. “When disasters strike, our volunteers respond, providing critical support to families and neighbors when it’s needed most,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “With home fires and disasters becoming more frequent, the contributions of these local heroes are more important than ever.”
Call for Blood Donations During Red Cross Month
Rep. Horsford will present this recognition during a local blood drive on Saturday, emphasizing the national need for blood donors.
Severe winter storms across the U.S. this year have caused the cancellation of over 1,000 blood drives, resulting in more than 30,000 uncollected blood donations. As the nation’s blood supply faces mounting challenges, Rep. Horsford and the Red Cross of Southern Nevada are urging Nevadans to donate blood to ensure lifesaving blood is available.
Donors can schedule appointments through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). To improve access to health care, the Red Cross of Southern Nevada is offering free A1C tests for blood donors throughout March. This test helps identify potential cases of diabetes or prediabetes. Additionally, those who come to donates blood in March will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card. Visit RedCrossBlood.org/March for more information.
Red Cross Giving Day on March 26
The 11th annual Red Cross Giving Day will take place on March 26. Community members are encouraged to participate by making donations that help provide essentials such as shelter, meals, relief supplies, healthcare, emotional support and financial aid to people impacted by disasters. To learn more or make a donation, visit redcross.org/givingday.
Beyond disaster response, the Red Cross equips communities with lifesaving CPR, first aid, and preparedness training, helping to build safer and more resilient neighborhoods.
