LAS VEGAS (Nov. 23, 2024) — Early this morning, American Red Cross volunteers from Southern Nevada responded to a fatal fire at the Paradise Spas condominiums on Las Vegas Boulevard, providing immediate assistance to 10 people displaced by the fire.
Firefighters arrived at the scene at 9457 S. Las Vegas Blvd., where the fire damaged or destroyed eight units, resulting in one fatality, and leaving two residents hospitalized and 10 people displaced from their homes. Fire and police officials are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
The Red Cross is aiding the displaced families with essentials such as temporary shelter, food, clothing, personal care items and financial support where necessary. “Our dedicated volunteers are providing emotional support and addressing emergency needs,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “Our volunteer caseworkers will continue to guide families through recovery in the coming days and weeks.”
Supporting Nevadans Affected by Home Fires
Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers and staff frequently respond to home fires, providing immediate assistance to affected families. Home fires are the nation’s most common disaster. This year, the Red Cross of Southern Nevada has responded to over 250 home fires, aiding about 1,100 people. Last year, our team supported almost 1,200 residents affected by nearly 300 home fires and installed more than 2,000 free smoke alarms. “We are grateful for our volunteers, community partners and all the generous donors who empower us to offer hope and relief to victims of home fires and other disasters,” Flanigan added.
Empowering Communities with Fire Safety
In response to the ongoing threat of home fires, the Red Cross of Southern Nevada continues working with community partners to provide free smoke alarms and fire safety education. “We’re equipping families with the knowledge they need to evacuate safely in case of a home fire,” Flanigan said.
Residents interested in fire prevention assistance can schedule an appointment for free smoke alarm installation at SoundTheAlarm.org/Nevada. During home visits, Red Cross volunteers and community partners share crucial information on home fire safety, fire prevention strategies, actions to take during a fire, and guidance on creating evacuation plans for all occupants, including pets. “Many don’t realize they only have about two minutes to escape a home fire and that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years,” Flanigan noted.
Supporting Your Community
Additional Disaster Action Team volunteers are needed in Clark County to ensure someone is always ready to respond when disaster strikes. After initial training, Red Cross disaster volunteers are prepared to respond to local emergencies, such as home fires, offering immediate support on-site or remotely. With experience and additional training, volunteers can deploy to major emergencies or disasters locally and nationwide. Explore disaster response volunteer opportunities at redcross.org/DAT.
