LAS VEGAS (July 2, 2025) — With nearly 1,500 homes in Clark County still without power after severe windstorms Tuesday, the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada will continue to staff an emergency shelter tonight at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The shelter, located in the South Hall (Room S2), provides a safe, air-conditioned space with water, snacks and support services for residents affected by the outages.
Currently, about 50 residents are spending the night at the shelter. The Red Cross will continue to staff the facility and provide assistance until power is fully restored for the affected residents.
“We are committed to supporting our community during this time of need,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “The shelter is open to anyone impacted by the power outages, and we will stay as long as necessary to provide relief and assistance.”
The shelter also accommodates small animals, thanks to support from Clark County Animal Protection Services, allowing evacuees to bring their pets and reduce stress during this challenging time. Residents with animals other than dogs or cats, or with unique needs, are encouraged to contact Animal Protection Services at 702-455-7710.
“Ensuring that pets have a safe place to stay during evacuations is crucial. It brings peace of mind to pet owners and allows them to focus on their own safety,” Flanigan added. “Pets are part of the family, so it’s important to include them in emergency preparedness plans.”
Severe Windstorm Causes Widespread Damage
A powerful windstorm swept through the Las Vegas Valley Tuesday, bringing gusts up to 70 mph and causing widespread damage. Over 60 utility poles were knocked down, leaving thousands of residents without power and creating hazardous conditions on roadways. The storm also caused zero visibility in some areas due to intense winds and dust, prompting the National Weather Service to issue severe thunderstorm warnings.
The hardest-hit areas included parts of the eastern and central valley, where downed power lines and debris blocked streets and damaged vehicles. NV Energy crews have been working to restore power, but the extent of the damage has led to extended outages for some residents.
Finding a Shelter
The Red Cross of Southern Nevada works closely with local emergency management and community partners to coordinate relief efforts and provide critical support during disasters. Red Cross shelters are open to everyone in need, and all disaster assistance is free. The Red Cross is dedicated to ensuring that no one is turned away during a time of crisis, offering a safe and welcoming space for all individuals and families affected by disasters.
Aid is provided to everyone, regardless of race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation or citizenship status. The Red Cross does not require any form of identification to enter a shelter—only a name and the location of residence prior to the disaster. Those in need of assistance can visit redcross.org/shelter or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (800-733-2767) for more information.
Evacuees going to a Red Cross shelter should bring essential items for each family member, such as prescription medications, clothing, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and comfort items. Families with children are encouraged to bring diapers, formula, toys, and other items for family members who have unique needs.
