LAS VEGAS (March 4, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada is teaming up with Clark County to light up the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign in red to officially kick off American Red Cross Month. The 89 perimeter lights of this historic landmark will glow red on Wednesday, March 5, at 3:30 p.m., urging the community to support the Red Cross by donating, giving blood, volunteering or learning lifesaving skills.
“Red Cross Month is a time to honor the Southern Nevadans who demonstrate the best of humanity by offering help and hope during times of crisis,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “With the increasing frequency of disasters and everyday emergencies like home fires, community support is more critical than ever. By donating, giving blood, volunteering or learning lifesaving skills, residents can turn compassion into action and make a real difference.”
Honoring a Tradition of Service
Red Cross Month traces its origins to 1943 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first national proclamation to recognize the organization’s volunteer-driven work. Every president since has continued this tradition, highlighting the essential role the Red Cross plays within communities.
Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft, a longtime Red Cross supporter, will join the event. “The lifesaving work of the Red Cross, particularly in ensuring a stable blood supply, is indispensable for communities like ours in Clark County,” he said. “Their dedication directly impacts the health and well-being of our residents. We commend their dedication and encourage our residents to support their lifesaving mission.”
Celebrate Red Cross Giving Day on March 26

Strengthening Communities
Beyond responding to disasters, the American Red Cross builds resilience in communities through ongoing programs. CPR, first aid and preparedness training help residents develop critical lifesaving skills, creating safer, stronger neighborhoods. The Red Cross also offers significant support to veterans and military families through emergency communication services, financial assistance and deployment and homecoming resources.

About the ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign
The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign was built and installed in 1959 after the Clark County Commission approved funding for the project along what was then Highway 91. Western Electric Display, also known as Western Neon, handled the construction and installation before being acquired by YESCO in the 1960s. Designed by Betty Willis, the sign features the distinctive Googie architectural style. Standing 25 feet tall, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, coinciding with Clark County’s centennial year.
