RENO, Nev. (Jan. 9, 2025) — A trained disaster volunteer from the American Red Cross of Northern Nevada deployed today to Los Angeles to begin a 14-day mission, aiding those impacted by the catastrophic wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles County. With Red Cross disaster relief teams already on the ground, efforts are underway to provide safe shelter, food and emotional support for the more than 180,000 residents forced to flee their homes.
These wildfires have inflicted immense destruction, leaving more than 9,000 homes, businesses and other properties damaged or completely destroyed. Tragically, at least five lives have been lost. The fires are among the most severe Los Angeles County has experienced, leaving shattered communities and a significant need for relief and recovery efforts.
“We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering commitment of our volunteer, who immediately stepped up to join the wildfire relief efforts in Los Angeles,” said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region. “Her compassion and dedication, along with the work of Red Cross teams and other partners, will bring vital support to those enduring unimaginable challenges right now.”
Compassion in Action
Barb Kramer, a Reno resident and 10-year Red Cross volunteer, has participated in more than 20 disaster relief deployments across the country. Arriving in Los Angeles today, she will dedicate her efforts to keeping shelters fully supplied and ensuring evacuees have meals and essential resources as part of the wildfire relief mission.
“Every time I deploy, I know the work I do, and the work of all the volunteers, makes a real difference in the lives of those facing terrifying disasters,” Barb said.
Comprehensive Red Cross Efforts for Wildfire Relief
With nearly 180,000 people displaced, the Red Cross is mobilizing alongside first responders, government agencies and community partners to provide comprehensive aid. Relief operations include emergency shelters, meals, health services, and emotional support to assist evacuees and those affected by the devastation. Over the coming days and weeks, the Red Cross will continue to respond to the evolving needs of impacted communities while offering hope and essential resources.
