LAS VEGAS (June 4, 2026) — With scheduled blood donation appointments dropping sharply in recent weeks, Meadows Mall is expanding its partnership with the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada by doubling the number of blood drives it hosts each month. Beginning today and continuing through the end of the year, the mall will host two Red Cross blood drives each month, giving donors more opportunities to help as summer donations slow.
Meadows Mall has hosted Red Cross blood drives since 2021, collecting 1,209 units of blood for patients who need transfusions for emergencies, surgeries, cancer treatment, childbirth complications and other serious medical needs. The expanded schedule gives the Red Cross a reliable Las Vegas Valley blood drive partner during a season when donor turnout and host support can be harder to secure.
“Meadows Mall has been a dependable partner in helping bring blood donation closer to the community,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “Adding more drives each month gives Southern Nevadans another convenient way to give, especially at a time when scheduled appointments are down but hospitals continue to rely on blood donors every day.”
A Decline in Scheduled Donations
Scheduled donations account for about 90% of all blood donations, and appointments have dropped sharply in recent weeks nationwide. The decline has contributed to a drop of several thousand units in the blood supply in just one week, raising concern as the summer donation slowdown begins.
Blood donations often decrease during the summer as the school year ends, families travel and regular routines change. At the same time, hospitals continue to need blood for emergencies, surgeries, cancer treatment, childbirth complications and trauma care. Blood has a shelf life of only 42 days, making regular donations essential.
