RENO, Nev. (Nov. 1, 2023) —The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada is celebrating National Veterans and Military Families Month by continuing its tradition of more than 140 years of unwavering support to active-duty military personnel, veterans and their families. The Red Cross remains a steadfast companion to the U.S. military community at all stages – from enlistment to veteran status.
“We thank service members and their families for the support they give our country every day,” said Tiandra Rushing, Executive Director of the American Red Cross, Northern Nevada Chapter. “November is a time to honor the families behind each service member and veteran, but it is also critical to recognize the challenges they face.”
This month, the Red Cross of Northern Nevada encourages residents to express their respect by thanking military members for their service and to transform this respect into action by volunteering with the Red Cross to support our military community. Commitment to the military community
In partnership with Military Relief Societies, the Red Cross also provides financial assistance in emergencies, ensuring that help is available when it's needed. For veterans, the Red Cross offers specialized services, including assistance with benefits and support during hospital stays.
Key elements of the Red Cross's support for military families include resilience training and preparedness information, which are particularly useful for families facing deployment and reintegration challenges. Red Cross volunteers and staff also conduct well-being workshops for military members, veterans and their families, along with providing community information and referral support.
Rushing added, “The Red Cross is committed to providing essential services to our military community. We offer confidential assistance around the clock, every day of the year, to ensure that no service member or family has to face a crisis alone.”
About National Veterans and Military Families Month
Veterans and Military Families Month was established in 1996 by the Armed Services YMCA and has been acknowledged annually by the U.S. government ever since. Every November, the President issues a proclamation designating November as National Veterans and Military Families Month. With more than 170,000 service members stationed overseas, acknowledging the daily sacrifices made by active duty, Guard and Reserve military families gains even greater significance.
