LAS VEGAS (Aug. 26, 2023) — On the 20th anniversary of National Dog Day, Saturday, Aug. 26, the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada is encouraging pet owners to take proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of their beloved companions by downloading the free Red Cross Pet First Aid app. This valuable resource equips pet owners with the necessary knowledge to handle emergency situations when their dogs might be sick or injured.
"Dogs and other pets are cherished members of our families, and it is crucial to ensure their safety and be prepared for any illnesses or injuries they may face," said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross, Southern Nevada Chapter. "For instance, many dog owners may not be able to recognize signs of an allergic reaction in their pets. Our first-aid app can provide guidance and even indicate when it's time to seek veterinary assistance."
National Dog Day, established in 2004, aims to raise awareness about the plight faced by animals worldwide and promote adoption. This year, the Red Cross is dedicating National Dog Day to ensuring pet owners are equipped with the knowledge and skills to effectively respond if their pets are injured. "The time to prepare for emergencies involving your pets is now," emphasized Flanigan.
Download the free Red Cross Pet First Aid app by searching “Red Cross’ in apps stores or visit redcross.org/apps. It’s compatible with smartphones, Apple Watch and Android wearable devices.

The Red Cross Pet First Aid App also features six quizzes, allowing pet owners to assess their understanding of various scenarios such as bite wounds, bleeding, blood sugar emergencies, CPR, heat illness, and shock. Each quiz consists of 10-15 questions and provides practical training for real-world situations involving your pets.
