RENO, Nev. (Aug. 6, 2024) — The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada is uniting with communities across Northern Nevada to gather tonight for National Night Out. Volunteers will be at events in Elko, Fernley, Wells and Winnemucca offering preparedness information and highlighting volunteering opportunities.
“Red Cross volunteers are passionate about bringing people together to make our communities safer and prepared for emergencies,” said Tiandra Rushing, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Nevada Chapter. “We continue to build strong relationships with residents and first responders to ensure that we are there in times of need.”
The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada will be at the following National Night Out celebrations tonight:
Preparing for the disasters and beyond
Recent natural disasters such as Tropical Storm Debby impacting Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina underscore the importance of readiness for unforeseen emergencies. In Northern Nevada, the threat of wildfires and home fires is significant, however, preparedness now extends beyond natural disasters to include cybersecurity threats, economic instability and other man-made challenges.
“The Red Cross remains dedicated to equipping all communities with the necessary information to be ready for any emergency,” Rushing said. “We are honored to participate in National Night Out across communities in Northern and Rural Nevada. Our goal is to guide everyone in taking proactive measures to prepare for disasters and make our communities safer.”
Ongoing community support
This year, Red Cross of Northern Nevada volunteers have responded to over 70 home fires, assisting nearly 200 displaced residents in cities and towns across Northern and Rural Nevada, such as Hawthorne, Yerington, Carson City, Reno, Winnemucca, Elko and Wendover.
Information on home fire safety, including our complimentary smoke alarm and installations program, will be available from the Red Cross at the National Night Out events. Details are available at any time at SoundTheAlarm.org/Nevada.
