LAS VEGAS (July 21, 2022) — The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada today announced it has received $10,000 from the NV Energy Foundation to support the non-profit’s mission to help prevent, prepare, and respond to home fires in the area.
“This donation will stay right here, allowing us to do more for residents when they need it most,” said Rachel Flanigan, American Red Cross of Southern Nevada Executive Director. “It will help us continue our lifesaving, fire prevention initiatives, such as providing free smoke alarms and installations in vulnerable communities. It’s a needed gift that will help support those who are in greatest need.”
The NV Energy Foundation annually addresses key community needs in the areas of safety and wellness, environmental and community enhancement, education (STEM), and arts and culture, while prioritizing diverse and historically underrepresented communities, according to Tony Sanchez, NV Energy executive vice president, business development and external relations and an NV Energy Foundation board director. The foundation reports that in 2021, it donated more than $5 million to 252 non-profit organizations throughout the state to address key needs of the communities. NV Energy employees also volunteered more than 15,000 hours last year, including with the Red Cross of Nevada.
“We are proud to partner with non-profit organizations throughout the state making a positive impact on the lives of Nevadans,” Sanchez said. “Our support of the American Red Cross in Nevada aligns with our commitment to helping ensure customer safety and health.”
Red Cross volunteers and staff often respond to home fires, which are the nation’s most frequent disaster. “A home fire can leave a family devastated and in need of immediate assistance,” Flanigan said. “Red Cross staff and volunteers provide emotional support, access to financial assistance, and valuable information to help families begin to recover.”
About home fire prevention
Residents can go to SoundTheAlarm.org/Nevada to schedule an appointment for a free smoke alarm installation. During the 20-minute home visit, Red Cross volunteers will also share information on home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts, and how to create an escape plan.
How to help others
Volunteers are always needed to help install smoke alarms and share fire safety information with families. No prior experience is needed — training is provided. Those interested can register at SoundTheAlarm.org/Nevada. Financial donations are also accepted to help members of the community prevent and recover from home fires.
