LAS VEGAS (Feb. 17, 2024) — The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada announced today it has received a $10,000 grant from the NV Energy Foundation to support the Red Cross’ mission to help prevent, prepare and respond to home fires and other disasters in the Las Vegas area.
“We take immense pride in our partnerships with nonprofit organizations that are transforming the lives of Nevadans,” said Tony Sanchez, NV Energy executive vice president, business development and external relations and an NV Energy Foundation board director. “Our support for the American Red Cross in Nevada underscores our commitment to prioritizing customer safety and wellbeing.”
The Red Cross of Southern Nevada frequently responds to home fires, the nation’s most common disaster, which often leaves families devastated and in immediate need of assistance. “Last year, our team responded to over 350 home fires, helping more than 1,200 local residents,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “This generous donation from the NV Energy Foundation will help ensure we can continue this vital work.”
Home fire victims assistance
Our Disaster Action Team volunteers are trained to provide emotional support, financial assistance and valuable information to help families begin to recover after a disaster. In December alone, volunteers responded to 33 home fires, aiding nearly 200 individuals, including on Christmas Day. “We are grateful for our volunteers, community partners and all the generous donors who empower us to offer hope and relief to victims of home fires and other disasters,” Flanigan added.
Join the team
More volunteers are needed in Southern Nevada to ensure that help is always ready when disaster strikes. After initial training, volunteers can sign up for shifts to respond to emergencies soon after they strike, day or night, rain or shine, either on-site or remotely. With experience and further training, volunteers can assume leadership and coordination roles, expanding their impact and becoming eligible for deployment to large-scale emergencies/disasters in Nevada and across the country.
